Chapter VII: Finding Happiness (Applying My Philosophy)

“The purpose of our lives is to be happy.”
—Dalai Lama

The Complexity of Pursuing Happiness

In this final chapter, I want to address a subject that perplexes many: the pursuit of happiness. The common belief that we’re in complete control of our lives and choices often makes happiness seem elusive. This illusion of control places the onus entirely on us, feeding into the misconception that happiness is just another milestone to achieve through sheer willpower. Yet, in a deterministic universe where our lives are shaped by prior events and external factors, this approach can prove not only futile, but damaging.

The belief in free will can make the quest for happiness a contradictory and often stressful endeavor. When we operate under the assumption that we have full control, we’re more likely to blame ourselves for not being “happy enough,” adding unnecessary guilt or frustration to our emotional experience. The expectations we set for our happiness can become unrealistically high, setting us up for disappointment when the predetermined nature of our universe steers events in unforeseen directions. This cycle of expectations and disappointments often leads to a state of perpetual dissatisfaction, as we endlessly chase after what we think will make us happy, without ever arriving there.

Surrendering to the idea that many aspects of our life are beyond our control might initially seem unsettling, but can ultimately be liberating. By relinquishing the need to control every variable, we create room for self-awareness, allowing ourselves the space to identify what genuinely brings us joy and fulfillment. It's crucial to understand that what makes one person happy doesn't necessarily do the same for another. Our unique experiences shape our individual senses of happiness, influenced by relationships, career satisfaction, personal values, and overall well-being.

Contrary to what some might think, the deterministic nature of our universe doesn’t rob us of the potential for happiness. Rather, it guides us toward a more authentic experience of contentment—one that isn’t dependent on the illusion of control, but rather grounded in a deep understanding of our role in the greater scheme of things. By acknowledging the boundaries of our influence over events, we can shift our focus toward appreciating what we do have and where we currently stand in life. This form of acceptance can lead to a version of happiness that is both more achievable and meaningful.

Finding Gratitude in the Mundane

Why do we so often overlook the simple joys that life offers? One reason might be routine; we become so accustomed to our daily comforts that we barely notice them. Take, for example, that daily cup of coffee. It’s not just caffeine in a cup—it’s warmth in your hands on a cold morning, a moment of solitude before a hectic day, and an experience that could whisk you back in time. And yet, most mornings, we sip it absentmindedly while scrolling through emails or watching the news, missing an opportunity for a small but meaningful moment of pleasure and gratitude.
