Chapter V: Accidental Motivation

“Adversity introduces a man to himself.” — Albert Einstein

Pivotal Moments: Finding Accidental Motivation with Steve Lawton

Before I left Brookdale, I had the distinct pleasure of a visit from Steve H. Lawton, a multifaceted individual with a background ranging from aerospace engineering at NASA to business executive roles at Dell. Thanks to a connection through Milo Hamilton, who worked with the ad agency promoting Steve’s book Head First, we were able to arrange this fortuitous meeting. What made Steve’s visit exceptionally impactful was how our experiences aligned; we were both survivors with powerful stories to share. We spoke at length about our respective accidents, finding common ground in a way that only those who have faced similar hardships can. What’s even more remarkable was that during our conversation, the idea for my own memoir began to crystallize. In a moment of shared insight, the title “Accidental Motivation” came to me—serving as a reminder of my journey and how I used my accident to propel me forward. The visit wasn't just a nice gesture, it got me thinking and helped me heal.

From Dependency to Self-Sufficiency: The Role of a True Friend

As my time at Brookdale drew to a close, Hollie took an active role in my transition plans. My ultimate goal was to regain my independence, yet it was apparent that I couldn’t handle the responsibilities of daily living on my own. My former wife had her own set of responsibilities, my siblings were too far away in Ohio, and among my friends in Austin, Hollie was a standout. She had been my rock for the last two months.

Supporters gathered for my departure from Brookdale Skilled Nursing Facility on November 2, 2016.

The day of my discharge arrived and I was greeted by a crowd of people who had been there with me, through thick and thin. Among them were my friends and cycling companions from that life-changing day. It was a profound reminder that life is a journey filled with ups and downs, best navigated with the support and love of those around us.

Hollie and her daughter welcomed me into their home. The preparation for this shift had been thorough. A member of Brookdale’s staff had joined us to assess the accessibility and safety features of Hollie’s residence. She’d gone the extra mile, installing a shower bench and motion-activated lights in essential areas. Little did I know, these simple additions would be invaluable, particularly when I found myself waking up every forty-five minutes to use the bathroom due to what later seemed to be a mistaken prescription for a diuretic.
